Comparing risk-based fuel treatment prioritization with alternative strategies for enhancing protection and resource management objectives

چکیده

Abstract Background Advances in fire modeling help quantify and map various components characterizations of wildfire risk furthermore evaluate the ability fuel treatments to mitigate risk. However, a need remains for guidance designing landscape-scale with protection objectives, resource management response mind. It is also important consider how human factors related tolerance may affect opportunities manage fire. We build on these themes illustrate an approach examining whether, how, can simultaneously minimize housing exposure while maximizing area suitable expansion beneficial wildfire. generate multiple hypothetical post-treatment conditions according distinct treatment prioritization schemes (Housing Protection, Federal Transmission, Random) variable extents compare performance across strategies 8.5 million ha case study landscape north-central New Mexico, USA. Results In general, we find that treating near units provide greatest level relative more remote wildlands reduce transmission potential. Treating federal lands was highly effective at reducing from fires expanding but contributed comparatively little all fires. as low 2.5–5% yield significant benefits spatially optimized strategies, whereas random strategy did not perform comparably until reaching much larger extent. Increasing expanded managed fire, decreasing opportunity flame length probability shrunk Conclusions This work provides contribution terms explicitly framing analysis design around land objectives adds knowledge base protect communities expand fire-prone landscape. Successful integration requires embracing pillars National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy, including coordinated fuels ownerships, home ignition zone mitigation, cross-boundary planning guide operations options.

Human Resource Management, Industrial Relations and Achieving Management Objectives

[Previous] [Next] The objectives of managements, the ways in which enterprises are managed to achieve these objectives and the human resource management (hereinafter referred to as "HRM") and industrial relations (hereinafter referred to as "IR") initiatives in this regard, are affected by pressures, many of which are exerted by globalization. Changes in IR practices (rather than in institution...

Management objectives for the protection of ecosystem services

People find themselves confronted with ever starker tradeoffs in the allocation of resources to competing uses and users. At the local level, for instance, allocation of land or water to agricultural, industrial, municipal, recreational, and conservation activities often involves a zero sum game. This is apparent in the widespread loss of water and land from native habitat to farms and increasi...

Design of operational management strategies for achieving fishery ecosystem objectives

Ecosystem objectives in fisheries management usually flow from high-level national policies or strategies and international agreements. Consequently they are often broadly stated and hence are difficult to incorporate directly in management plans. Predicting the results of any management action is very uncertain because the dynamics of ecosystems are complex and poorly understood. Methods to de...

Risk based urban watershed management under conflicting objectives.

Ecological impairment and flooding caused by urbanization can be expressed numerically by calculating the risks throughout the watershed (floodplain) and along the main stems of the streams. The risks can be evaluated in terms of the present and/or future. This article describes the methodologies for ascertaining the risks in the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) environment. The objective...
